How to Prevent Urinary Tract Infections in Cats and Dogs

In addition to producing healthy plant-based food, Evolution Diet has been running a cat/dog/ferret rescue for over 27 years in the USA, which helped thousands of animals. In this blog post, we would like to share our experience on how to care for cats and dogs that are showing signs of urinary tract infections.

• Use distilled water to keep your cats and dogs hydrated. Distilled water can be made with a table top distiller, purchased directly through a water delivery service, or bought at a grocery store.

• Clean your cat litter box every day and remove all fecal matter and soaked urine. After cleaning, spray the litter that you leave in the box with hydrogen peroxide with at least 5-7 broad sprays and then shake the litter that has been sprayed to scatter the hydrogen peroxide.  This will kill most remaining bacteria, mold and viruses without harming cats.   

• Clean the floors, seating surfaces and counter tops with a mild detergent or vacuum at least once per week to remove excessive bacteria and disease-causing pathogens you may be bringing in with your shoes. 

• Keep your cats indoor, except for a very rare occasion. This helps because you never know what they are going to eat or chemicals they contact when they are outside. Keep cats and dogs off chemically treated lawns at all times.

• Use an electric water fountain (e.g. Veken) and clean it at least once every two weeks. Use distilled water to clean the filter before putting it back on the counter.  The fountain encourages cats to drink more water and clear pathogens including heavy metals, drugs and minerals out of their systems. 

• If your cat or dog consumes moistened kibble, mix the kibble with 1 part distilled water and let the food sit for at least one hour in the refrigerator before serving. You can add some dry kibble to clean their teeth and gums. Moistened kibble is a better way to feed cats and dogs, because it is easier to digest, and works better for absorption and utilization of nutrients.

• For extra protection, you may add ½ - 700 mg capsule of cranberry powder, mixed with some VegeYeast or pNooch, to each meal. This will help protect the inner lining of the cat’s urinary tract from bacterial invasion and crystal formation.     

• Test urine pH at home using over-the-counter pH test strips. The normal pH of cat urine is in the range of 6.0 - 6.5. Plant-based food for cats and dogs contains natural acidifiers that keep pH in this range. However, if more protection is necessary, vitamin C can be added to the food. 100% pure ascorbic acid powder is easy to come by in the vitamin department of a grocery or health food store or online.
