Dogs under 12 months of age require different amounts of certain nutrients than adult dogs. For this reason, only a diet appropriate for growing dogs should be fed to puppies. 

Nutritional requirements of growing dogs are established by AAFCO(American Association of Feed Control Officials). For example, AAFCO specifies a minimum protein requirement for puppies as 22.5% of dry matter (which is higher than for adult dogs - 18%).
